Geek-Free Music Production

This is Holistic Songwriting's legacy course on how to produce your own songs to gain creative independence.

Make today the last day you ever pay for a producer...

Everything you need to know to get started producing your own songs.

Transform yourself from 'just a songwriter', to a Songwriter-Producer:

Recognize this? You are already writing cool songs with just your piano or guitar and your voice, and they sound great. But in your head you are hearing all these flashy arrangements complete with beat, hooks, instrument parts, backing vocals and other elements like delays and reverbs, that makes modern commercial songwriting so cool.

You would love to see your songs come to live like this, but don't have money to pay a producer, and you would really love to keep your creative autonomy.

Well, it is time to stop viewing yourself as 'just a songwriter', and start your journey in becoming a Songwriter-Producer. Geek-Free Music Production will be your first step on this journey. Even if...

...you have never touched or seen a DAW (Digitial Audio Workstation) in your life before

...you don't have a lot of money to invest into expensive equipment and software

Gain creative independence and freedom producing your own music

this workshop will show you all the basics you need, 100% geek-free.

Produce productions productively

The fundamentals you need to turn your song ideas into addictive, commercial productions.

1

Part I: Introduction

Like the name already suggests, this course is going to be completely geek-free. Friedemann isn't going to nerd out on all kinds of complex computer tech stuff. This is going to be hands on, practical, and as simple as possible.

2

Part II: Buying Gear

Discover that you don't need to invest thousands of dollars to produce your own songs. You can get started with an investment of a couple hundred bucks.

You'll get lists, PDFs and explanations about mics and other equipment you need, and what you might want to invest in, in the future.

3

Part III: Getting Started with your DAW

Here we go over how the DAW "Logic Pro X" works. This is mac-only software, but the principles apply to other software as well (just the shortcuts are different).

4

Part IV: Tools & Working with Audio

All the basics you need to know about how to record, work with and edit audio. Learn how to work with the most important tools your DAW offers for easy editing.

Exercises and audio files are provided so you can practice all this.

5

Part V: MIDI

MIDI is going to be one of the most important tools if you are not going to record a lot of 'real' instruments. Here you learn how to get started with the piano roll in your DAW and how to create instrument parts using virtual instruments.

6

Part VI: Further Steps

Get organized by creating templates and learn how to import audio files into your own DAW. These audio files are included in the course material. You will also learn about the 5 mixing mindsets.

7

Part VII: Understanding Sound & the EQ

Why does music sound the way it does? What is the overtones series and why is it important? The different frequency bands you need to know, Corrective vs. Creative EQ. All this, and more is explained in Part VII.

8

Part VIII: Compression & Routing

Get a basic understanding of this often misunderstand but essential music production tool called compression. You will also learn how to route your tracks and buses for the best possible results and workflow.

9

Part IX: Flexing, Mixing & Reverb

Ever heard of flexing vocals? No? Well, you will after going through this part. We will also go over automation, reverb, mixing your music, and different mixing formulas.

This is what Songwriters say about

Geek-Free Music Production...

I wish I had this when I first started out, it would have saved me months

SEAN -

songwriter-Producer

This course is a great 101 for logic and production. I wish I had this when I first started out, it would have saved me months of research on gear and where to begin. I've been using Logic for a while and I still learnt a bunch of new things I never knew I could do in Logic.
The humor throughout is also great. It kept me engaged and having fun throughout the process. Also, keeping the videos in smaller bite sized chunks is a great idea - It makes it easy to do some of the course each day and then come back to it when you need to.

this is a well thought out course and is really useful

Anderson -

songwriter-Producer

I love how you zoomed in a lot and printed out the keyboard shortcuts on screen. It really helps beginners be less confused with the keystrokes and you should continue to do this for future courses.
All in all, this is a well thought out course and is really useful. The humor suits your image and I especially love the ending of exercise 15.2.

This "AMP system" is an easily understandable way of describing the three key pieces of a DAW

Pablo -

songwriter-Producer

The first section (what to buy, avoid, etc.) has some incredibly valuable information and advice for beginners and intermediate users as well.
The second section (all the LPX vids) is also great at what it is. Even though I've only ever used Ableton, after watching you explain the software I feel familiar enough with Logic's workflow to want to give it a try.
One thing that I specially liked is that, while you explained Logic's workflow, you added your advice on what tools and functions are the most useful and which ones you don't use at all. It's Logic explained from the perspective of somebody who's used it a lot to write songs, which is something that you don't get if you just sit and read the manual. I think that's very, very valuable and I wish more courses did that.
I like a lot the "AMP system" you came up with, which is just a nice name for explaining the basics on how a DAW works.
I read The Addiction Formula (actually listened to the audiobook) and I really liked the way you came up with original ways of explaining concepts. This "AMP system" is an easily understandable way of describing the three key pieces of a DAW.

And this is what they say about Holistic Songwriting...

taught me that I too can find my own voice with confidence

Weslay hibberd - writer

Having failed many times at writing a song I am happy with I have found that perseverance and sound guidance from Friedemann has reconfigured my approach and led me to achieve results I love. I enjoy the songwriting process, and Friedemann has taught me that the methods adopted by many great songwriters I admire are not transcendent and I too can find my own voice with confidence. Friedemann inspired me to use songwriting methods as tools rather than blueprints to communicate mine.

opened a new world for me

steve b -

writer

Friedemann opened a new world for me with his approach to songwriting and singing the initial lyrics. Skeptical at first, not really a singer. I tried it and was amazed at the increased production and improvement in my songs. And, many of his tools are also very helpful and time savers too. Now the band is heading to the studio to record enough for a first EP. I couldn't have done it without his guidance.

helped me expand beyong being a rap artist

moreno muanza -

rapper

I started rapping when I was fourteen and today I'm twenty one. I left College 2-3 years ago to pursue music full time. I had the confidence and vision to become a professional artist but there were skills and information I KNEW I was missing. I read every and any songwriting book I can get my hands on and any music theory book I can find. I've been going to music conventions for years... to become a professional,  I knew I needed guidance or a coach. Holistic Songwriting helped me expand beyond being a rap artist. I studied and bought every product holistic songwriting has ever created. My testimonial for holistic songwriting is me releasing three EP'S and one twelve song mixtape. Holistic songwriting gave me the perspective and creativity to make four musical projects & SIX music video's. My goal is to be a platinum selling artist and I know holistic songwriting can make me that Artist.

changed my life and it's thanks to your education

asia ward -

Writer

My name is Asia Ward and I graduated last May with a degree in musical theatre, but nowadays, I produce, write, and sing songs for myself and other people. The only way that transition was possible was because of your courses. I started making music for fun after musical theatre didn't work out, but had no direction on where to start. With your guidance, my older songs were selected to win a slot in Tayla Parx's songwriting/production camp in NYC with people like Tommy Brown, Sarah Hudson, Ali Thompson, Normani, and more were in attendance. It changed my life and it's thanks to your education. You are able to break down giant ideas into a language I understand.

my single has gained over 500K streams

eric ryan -

recording artist

Once I found your videos on youtube & purchased your audiobook, it taught me a variety of tools that I could use to formulate/create the structures of my songs... Some of which now have over hundreds of thousands of streams across my platforms!

I love the way you break knowledge/music concepts down to level where "music theory" isn't needed to understand. The way you teach these concepts are in a fun/easy to take in sort of way if that makes sense... I see you as like the "cool/fun" teacher that everyone had in school.

Thanks to holistic songwriting, the tools I learned helped me structure & arrange all of my music including my single „Soleil“ which has gained over 500K streams/plays across all my platforms combined!!

broke me out of the box I was in for 20 years

ehrich weiss -

writer

I'm a hobbyist songwriter and musician of over 30 years looking to improve my skills in writing lyrics, melody and rhythms for my songs. Holistic Songwriting has broken me out of the little box I had been occupying in my musical journey and given me a new direction for my ideas, and especially one I've had for almost 20 years but was going nowhere.

How does lifetime access sound? After enrolling, you have unlimited access to this course for as long as you like - across any and all devices you own.

Do I need any prior knowledge for this course?

No. You don’t even need to know what a DAW is. You don’t need to be able to play an instrument, you don’t need to know music theory, you don’t even need to be a songwriter to get started.

"If I have a question about something in the course, can I contact Holistic Songwriting?"

Yes, you're more than welcome to ask us whatever you want, course related or not at me[at]holistic-songwriting.com (replace "[at]" with "@").

Do I need to own any equipment going into this course?

No. Everything you need will be explained in the course. An Apple Computer (MacBook, iMac, etc) is recommended, but not necessary.

How technical is this course? Can I do this?

Yes. Everything technical is explained in the course, and it is definitely not difficult. If Kanye can do it, so can you. ?

Why should I want to learn how to produce my own songs?

Oh gosh, a thousand reasons. Here’s just some of the most important ones:

• You choose your sound.
• You’re independent from others.
• You’re spending way less money on recordings.
• You choose your sound. Yes, it’s that important.
• You can make finished songs people can listen to all by yourself.
• It’s kind of a requirement in the modern industry for songwriters to be able to produce their own songs. If you want to write 100+ songs a year you do NOT want to pay someone else $500+ per song to produce them all.
• You’ll become a better musician. Recording yourself means you can check your timing, sound and pitch quickly and easily.
• You’ll be able to give better feedback if you ever work with another producer. Knowing how mixing works definitely helps in communicating with a mixing engineer.
• It’s fun!
• It’s endlessly creative. Ask anyone.

How long will it take me to produce my first songs?

It depends, obviously. You’ll be recording and mixing within hours. It might be a while before you record anything that sounds good though. That is entirely dependent on you. Some of my most obsessed students deliver really pretty good productions after their first week, others take a month. It also depends on your experience level as a musician/songwriter. But rest assured: By the end of the course you will be able to produce good sounding demos.

Do I need a Mac or Logic Pro X for this?

I do recommend it, yes. Logic is the software we’ll be working with and that only runs on Mac. However, if you already own a DAW and you just want to know about Compression, EQing, Routing, Mixing, Writing in a DAW, etc – so anything other than the basics of the DAW, this course still offers a lot of insights you can use in whatever DAW you use.
